Chapter 3 His Choice
After handing in his class quiz for Advanced Calc., Jaejoong wondered if he would pass. He would not pass if he relied only on his own knowledge for he had failed to answer half of the exam questions; however, if his Wish Note worked like how it did the last time, he would certainly pass; perhaps not only pass but excelled this quiz.
Yesterday afternoon, after Jaejoong had regained control of his own body and mind, he found himself facing two obstacles, the first and the hugest being his impossibly hard classes. Not only he had to finish his missed subjects in high school, he also needed to catch up with his current subjects and remain the best in his class, in order to stay friends with his roommate Yunho.
Yunho, who showed great concerns for him, turned out to be the nicest person Jaejoong had ever known. The boy was gentle, kind and modest in every possible way. He was not joking when he reminded Jaejoong he was the best in all of his subjects. Even so, he still listened attentively in lectures and always actively participated in discussions. Jaejoong found himself watching Yunho subconsciously during their class time; he tried convincing himself that it was due to his boredom from listening to their professors but he knew there was more. After all, he did go through all this trouble just to be with him; what else could it be other than the fact that he fancied Yunho. Jaejoong was not the only one watching though for almost half the class had their eyes on Yunho instead of their supposedly exciting lecture notes or talking nonstop professors. All of this was happening without the acknowledgement of Yunho himself; Jaejoong was feeling relieved as well as disappointed. He was glad that Yunho did not notice other glances but it also meant he would never notice his.
The other obstacle out of the two was actually the rightful handling of his Wish Note. The only thing he knew about this little book was that it grant its owner’s wishes. His one wish was granted after he wrote in the book for the very first time. How it happened though was rather mysterious and in some degree worrying. A year seemed to have passed after he woke up from his long dream. Jaejoong found himself living a completely different life, being surrounded by unfamiliar faces. He had thought of going back; reverse everything that had changed by writing the counter words of his wish on the purple book. He’d face at least ten less problems if everything went back to normal; however, whenever he looked at Yunho who was either studying or sleeping on the other side of the room, all he could think was the fact that how lucky he was to be here, right next to his hero.
Jaejoong was torn. On one hand, he wanted to save himself from this unfamiliar and yet hectic life; but on the other side, he was sure he want to remain by Yunho’s side. It was time to choose again and Jaejoong was already tired of choosing. How many times a day did he have to make a choice? From minor ones such as what to wear and what to eat, to life threatening choices such as this one at hand. Why didn’t someone just tell him what to do for once; why did he have to make all the choices by himself?
Jaejoong weighted one and then the other; and finally he came to his final decision, a best answer he could ever come up with. He had decided to use his Wish Note again. He knew little or nothing about the book. He had tried to “google” it but none of the results related to his purple book as he looked through pages and pages of “get well wish cards” and “wish notes from nurses”. He tried deriving rules from Death Note, but nothing fitted. Jaejoong didn’t want to use it until he was 100% sure on how to use the book but now he had little choice. He hated to feel that he had little or no control of his life, but lately he had often felt this way. Jaejoong decided to think on the positive side, if it worked for him once then it should work again. Hoping for the best, he wrote down his second wish on a freshly new parchment.
I wish I am as smart as Yunho and do well in all of my classes.
If it worked, then no longer would Jaejoong worry for his failing grades, and if it didn’t; well, in that case, Jaejoong would have to do some drastic actions for those insane courses.
After taking another glance at the thin line of words, Jaejoong closed the book and put it into his bag. He laid himself onto bed, wondering or perhaps worrying what would happen the following morning. Would everything change again or would everything still remain the same…

When Jaejoong woke up the next morning, he looked at his surroundings carefully. To his relief, he was still in the same dorm room and Yunho was still sleeping soundlessly on the other side. He was still lying on the same bed and his table was still the same dark brown wood study table he had been using for the past two weeks. Nothing had changed.
He was not sure whether the Wish Note had worked since he did not spot any changes. But Jaejoong was certain of one thing; if his wish note had not worked, he would fail his calculus quiz for sure.

After the quiz in their Advanced Calc. class, Jaejoong and Yunho walked into their second class, which was physics 212.
At this point, Jaejoong was not sure what he had learned in this course thus far. He had never had physics during his high school days and thus this was a big challenge for him.
The teacher went on talking in front of the classroom, but Jaejoong was ready to sleep. The loud voice had become soft and little by little it became faint…
“A standing wave on a stretched string results from the interference of two traveling waves. Which of the following wave properties is not the same for the two traveling waves that interfere to produce the standing wave?”
“D. the direction of travel!” Jaejoong heard his own voice as well as Yunho’s voice answering in union.
“Well done, Yunho and Jaejoong, two participation points for each!” Dr. Tyce announced cheerfully after she had recorded the extra points onto their grade book.
Not sure what had just happened, Jaejoong sat up quickly in shock, now he was wide awake after the little interaction. He sat up ever so straightly and looked around the class. No one was looking at him since everyone was busy copying the notes down from the board. Jaejoong turned his head to the other side and looked at Yunho. Yunho was doing the same as to the rest of his classmates, carefully copying notes from the board before they were erased.
Jaejoong turned his eyes away from Yunho and looked straight ahead. What was happening just then? Had he answered a question without even hearing the question itself? Was that his imagination for he had been dozing off? If it was, how would he explain those awarded participation points? His head was filled with questions, suspicions and wonders again. What could it be this time?
“The bulk modulus is a proportionality constant that relates the pressure acting on an object to______, fill in the blank please!” Jaejoong was still greatly puzzled when he heard the professor spoke. This time, he had heard the question clearly; he was sure he did not know the answer of the given question but to his surprise, a phrase jumped into his head abruptly. Before he could understand its meaning, he heard himself speaking, “the fractional change in volume” loudly, and again he had said the answer along with Yunho. Their voices overlapped each other perfectly.
“Oh wow, once again! Good work, you two sure studied our material carefully. Jaejoong, I’m glad to see you being yourself again!” Dr. Tyce commented on their great performance and smiled sweetly at them. Jaejoong forced a smile on his face, as to reply his professor. At this moment, he only wanted to leave this room and get away from everyone. What just happened again and why was he…?
The bell rang just in time and Jaejoong was happy to get out of there. But it was not the end of his day, he had three more classes to attend and he was sure some strange things would happen sooner or later…

At the end of the day, Jaejoong was certain the book had worked again. He was as smart as Yunho since he had been answering all the in-class questions, shouting the answers out precisely when Yunho was speaking them. Their voices were always perfectly in union; even Yunho was surprised when they spoke together for the fourth time.
Though Jaejoong answered almost every single question their teachers had asked, he did not understand any of the questions itself. The answers would always pop inside of his head suddenly and then he would speak it regardless of his wish. The interesting thing was that when Yunho had not answered the question, Jaejoong didn’t either. He only spoke when Yunho spoke and then their voices would join each other once more.
Certainly the book had worked again for it had granted another wish of his. He was as smart as Yunho and surely he would do well in his classes at this rate. Jaejoong should be happy since he no longer had to worry about his extremely hard classes, but he felt like a puppet. He felt like a robot, as if he was only a machine to transfer and announce the answers another had thought of. It didn’t feel great as he had wished it would. What was he going to do now?
